During the FAUST sales team’s visit to the new JULABO plant in Lahr, we had the opportunity to speak with Thomas Hauser, head of sales at the Swiss laboratory equipment distributor FAUST, about temperature control technology in the Swiss laboratory market. 

In the interview, he explains what laboratories should look for when selecting temperature control instruments – from temperature stability and reproducibility until service, energy efficiency, and long-term process reliability.

Mr. Hauser, what requirements do laboratories have for modern temperature control instruments?

Customers often come to FAUST with very specific requirements regarding temperature stability, reproducibility, and process reliability. Applications range from analytical laboratories and research and development to pharmaceutical, chemical, and industrial processes.

A typical example is the temperature control of double-jacketed reactors. Here, precise and hassle-free temperature control is crucial to ensure that reactions proceed in a controlled manner and results remain reproducible.

Often, the goal is to replace existing temperature control solutions. This may be the case when existing units no longer deliver the desired accuracy, react too slowly, or require too much effort in daily operation. FAUST also supports customers who are setting up new applications and do not yet know exactly which temperature control technology will best suit their process in the long term.

 

In the demanding Swiss laboratory market in particular, temperature control solutions that offer hassle-free integration of precision, process reliability, and energy efficiency in day-to-day laboratory operations are essential.

What do customers in the Swiss laboratory market particularly value when it comes to temperature control solutions?

The Swiss market is characterized by very high quality standards. Precision and hassle-free reliability are crucial for many customers because their results depend directly on stable and reproducible temperature control.

In addition to technical performance, consulting, response time, and service also play a major role. Customers expect their application to be understood and to receive reliable support during selection, initial operation, and any subsequent questions.

Sustainability and energy efficiency are also becoming increasingly important. Especially for systems that are operated over the long term, customers are paying closer attention to how efficiently a solution performs in everyday use and how well it aligns with their long-term requirements.

What are some common mistakes made when selecting temperature control instruments?

A common misconception is that a unit’s temperature range or performance alone determines its suitability. While these values are important, in practice they are not sufficient for the determination of the right solution.

Depending on the application, additional factors may be relevant, such as the required temperature control accuracy, the dynamics of the process, the volume to be temperature-controlled, or the ambient conditions. The required speed and stability of the system’s response to temperature changes can also be a decisive factor.

That is why it is important to take a holistic view of the application. Only once the specific requirements are fully understood can it be determined which temperature control solution will perform reliably in day-to-day operation.

Can you give an example of a situation where it only became clear during the consultation which solution was truly the right fit?

A customer initially inquired about a standard circulator because he was primarily focused on the desired temperature. During the discussion, however, it became clear that for his process, it was not only the target temperature that was critical, but above all, high temperature stability and a fast response time.

By jointly analyzing the application, we were able to select a solution that was significantly better suited to the actual requirements. The result was more stable processes, more reproducible measurement results, and greater satisfaction in day-to-day operations.

This example illustrates how important consultation is when selecting temperature control technology. This is because the initial inquiry often describes only a portion of the requirements. During the discussion, it becomes clear which criteria are truly decisive for the success of the application.

In your opinion, what makes for a good temperature control solution – beyond the technical data?

A good solution doesn’t end with the delivery of the unit. What matters most is that the application works hassle-free in everyday use and that the customer receives long-term support.

This includes in-depth consultation beforehand, straightforward initial operation, prompt support for questions, and reliable service throughout the system’s entire life-time. Technical data are important – but they must be suited to real-world applications.

The best solution is therefore one that provides the customer with long-term reliability. It supports stable processes, simplifies day-to-day operation, and allows users to focus on their core tasks.
